There are a lot of emotional issues addressed in this book and the author handles them in the telling of this tale beautifully. Detectives Jason Strong and Vanessa Layne are still recovering from the death of the beloved Captain John Patton. Lt Morris moves up to Patton's office and Lt. Eric Savage is promoted from another station and into the supervising position that Strong has turned down. The detectives meet their new boss as they report in with details of a new case that begins at begins with a phone call in the wee hours of the morning and they are investigating the case before daylight. While Lt. Savage seems to an understanding supervisor, his work load on them produces its problems as he creates a 24 hour shift their first day with him to follow through on this case and actually shows up after midnight to see if they are on duty. The second death a few days later when a victim who is five months pregnant has a drastic emotional effect on Layne. It is soon discovered that the hours are taking its toll on Layne's marriage. Lt. Savage lets them know he is considering breaking up their partnership, when the reason Strong turned down the promotion was so they could continue to work together. I HATE the end of this story only because it makes cops, teachers, and other professionals have to be above humanity. We are expected to perform our jobs dealing with some of the baser people in life but are excepted to not react when being subjected to it day after day after day for years and years. EXCUSE US FOR BEING HUMAN AND HAVING A HEART! Sorry. My band wagon. But... I love this author's work! Keep on writing John C. Dalglish!

Jason and Vanessa are putting in some long hours and their spouses are worried that they are not getting enough rest. There is no time to waste if they are going to save lives.
The book was another short one and I easily read it all at once. The story is straightforward with not a lot of twists and turns. I did enjoy the story and catching up with old friends — while meeting new ones.
If you enjoy clean suspense books, this series is for you. I am off to read book fifteen SHADOW OF DOUBT.

Light reading, I could read the author's book in an evening. Reading Mr. Dalglish books are much like watching a police television series without annoying commercials.
